Department of Ras Shastra & Bhaishjya Kalpna is one of the basic departments of any Ayurvedic college. From the very beginning when CCIM was formed and its curriculum came into force, there were minimum seven teaching departments in Ayurvedic Colleges as specified by the council. Ras Shastra & Bhaishjya Kalpna was one of them. Drvyaguna was also clubbed with Ras Shastra & Bhaishjya Kalpna in these seven departments, later on the CCIM introduced expansions of Ayurvedic colleges by introducing minimum fourteen departments and then Ras Shastra & Bhaishjya Kalpna was seprated as an independent department.
This institute made rapid strides in its developments and post graduation was introduced in Ras Shastra & Bhaishjya Kalpna with upgradation of the Department to P.G.Dept. in the year 2004 with an annual intake of three students which was increased to 4 students per year since 2021.
This department has also one of best museum having about 1000 different samples of Ras dravyas. There is a separate Bhatti section for the preparation of kupi Pakava by traditional method along with different kind of puta as per traditional textual guidelines. There is also electrical operated muffle furnace of different capacity besides various other quality assurance equipment such as Disintegration test unit friability tester, tablet hardness tester etc.
The department of Rasa Shastra & Bhaishajya kalpana is a well established department at RGGPGAC, Paprola with its state of art pharmacy and research work. The Charak Govt. Ayurvedic Pharmacy attached to the department with its recently constructed new building enjoys the status of State Level Pharmacy and catering to the need of medicine supply to all Ayurvedic Health Centres and Regional Ay. Hospitals of the Himachal State. Recently a drying section for raw herbs has been added to pharmacy unit.
The department is working to achieve following objectives to train the students and scholars at UG, and PG level –
a. Objectives –
To make U.G. students able to recognize the key importance of herbomineral drugs as the backbone of treatment through Ayurved
To make P.G. scholars acquire the competency pertaining to identification, manufacturing, quality control of drugs, pharmacovigilance of Ayu. Drugs, to get oriented with the principles of Industrial Pharmacy & Pharmaceutics & also to develop excellent skills in research methodology as well as in teaching methodology.
b. Methodology –
Departmental activities through various practical’s with equal participation of Teaching staff and P.G. scholars.
Clinical training by way of active involvement in OPD,
Regularly organized activities – Departmental seminars, discussions on various Journals and presentations, group discussions on innovative ideas of pharmacy practice, are some of the common and regular activities of the department.
Academic tours are organized to various Private Pharmaceuticals situated in Himachal Pradesh for getting the knowledge of modern manufacturing practices of herbal products.

2. Activities:
a. Under Graduate (BAMS) level –
The students of BAMS 2nd Professional are exposed with practical demonstrations of various kalpanas (both herbal & herbo-mineral) and theory lectures of the subject.
Group wise discussions with presentations and incorporation of observations in practical notebooks to make their concepts more clear..
b. Post Graduate (MD) level –
Post Graduate scholars of the department receive pharmaceutical industry oriented training in the pharmacy while theory classes are delivered by the faculty members to offer advanced knowledge of the subject. The department adopts innovative techniques to train their Post Graduate scholars. Different practicals are performed aimed at different dosage forms of a single drug, or improving the palatability of any drug.
Research drugs of MD scholars of every other department is also standardized & prepared in the pharmacy as per GMP norms
Visitation to various Industrial Houses involved in herbal drug manufacturing is undertaken for getting the knowledge of modern manufacturing practices of herbal products.
Experimental studies are done to establish the safety & efficacy of Ayu. Herbomineral drugs.
Every effort is made to develop their competence in advanced concepts of research in the areas of Ayurvedic Pharmaceutics & therapeutics by incorporating fundamentals of Ayurveda.
3. Clinical facilities:
The department is having well established infrastructure, and also offers clinical consultation to patients by way of Ayurvedic herbo-mineral, mineral & herbal drugs through its well functioning OPD.
4. Research Activities
Every Year four P.G.Scholars are admitted in the Department who participate in various research activities related to their thesis work.

- ROTP was organized in the deptt in the year 2009.
- A project of Govt of India on Ayurvedic pharmacopeia has been done in the year 2009.
